Xiaomi’s CEO Confirm Under-Display Fingerprint Recognition For Mi7

After a brief pause, it’s only time that the Xiaomi Mi7 surfaces once again on the rumor mill. However, this time we don’t have a rumor to report on. Rather, it’s an offhanded comment from Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun, that hints at virtual fingerprint sensing for the upcoming smartphone.

In a comment thread on a Weibo post about the recently launched Mi MIX 2S, CEO Lei Jun was spotted to have replied in the affirmative to a question about an under-display fingerprint scanner on the upcoming Mi 7. However, the report suggests that this was a friendly exchange and should not be considered an official confirmation by the brand. No other features or specifications were mentioned in the conversation.

Recent reports have revealed that Xiaomi will be launching Mi 7 and Mi 7 Plus flagship phones soon. The leaked firmware files of the Mi 7 have revealed plenty of information on its specs and features. However, the firmware files could not confirm whether the Mi 7 will feature an under-display fingerprint reader. So far, it has been revealed that the Mi 7 (codenamed as Dipper) may arrive with a notched display, Snapdragon 845, AI equipped 16-megapixel dual rear cameras, advanced facial recognition and 3,400mAh battery with wireless charging.

There is little concrete information to suggest virtual fingerprint sensing for the Xiaomi Mi7. Of course, since the Chinese regulatory environment is more relaxed than ours, Xiaomi just might choose to equip its premium smartphone with the feature.
