It is being widely reported that the Xiaomi Mi5 will launch once the Snapdragon 820 chipset is commercially available. But in what could be a hint at a further delay, CEO Lei Jun says that they won't be rushing to be the first smartphone to be powered by Qualcomm's new chipset.
Xiaomi's yet-to-be-announced Mi 5 says that the phone may not launch until April 2016. A report of China cites use of Qualcomm's Snapdragon 820 processor. This corroborates to an earlier report that said Samsung had an agreement with Qualcomm that gave the brand an exclusive access to the chipset until April 2016. This would mean that no handset brand can launch its high-end device with the Snapdragon 820 before Samsung's next flagship, which is likely to feature the chipset.
In the meantime, the Xiaomi Mi 5 has been a regular on the rumor mills, and recently a Chinese online retailer allegedly revealed almost everything there is to know about the forthcoming smartphone. It will boast a metal unibody design with ultra-thin bezels as well as a fingerprint scanner integrated into a physical home button up front.
Xiaomi Mi 5 specifications and features: The smartphone is rumored to feature a 5.5-inch QHD display, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 820 chipset, 4GB of RAM, and 16GB, 64GB and 128GB storage variants.
According to the report, Xiaomi may price its upcoming Mi5 flagship at somewhere around the CNY 2,499. This would make it Xiaomi's most expensive non-phablet flagship phone to date. The reason why the Mi5 could be priced higher than the Xiaomi Mi4 is apparently because the company is looking to change its brand image in the market. Moving on, Xiaomi wants to be known as a more premium brand.
Some reports have claimed that Xiaomi may launch two versions of the Mi 5 - one priced at CNY 1,999 and another Xaiomi Mi5 Plus priced at CNY 2,499. The Chinese company is also said to use a pressure-sensitive touchscreen, which will be a technology similar to Apple's 3D Touch-like pressure sensitive technology. The Chinese company may not have revealed launch date of the Mi 5 flagship smartphone, but the company has been buzzing social media with claims that the handset will be "worth the wait" and is "very, very good".
