The Xiaomi Mi Mix and Xiaomi Mi Note 2 is a pretty exciting smartphone. The most obvious thing about it is its near bezel-less display, which is curved around the corners to give the effect that the entire front of the phone is a display. It turns out that the display isn’t the only cool feature, though — the phone also features what Xiaomi is calling “Inner Beauty,” which basically replaces the device’s proximity sensor with ultrasound software.
Sure, any smartphone still has to have an edge to encapsulate the screen — even if that edge is curved. And Xiaomi’s accomplishment here shouldn’t go unrecognized. But the fact remains that Xiaomi’s marketing images for the phone show a top and side bezels that are much thinner in drawings than they are on the actual product.
A smartphone with that design felt like a distant dream on Monday, but it became a reality on Tuesday when Xiaomi unveiled the phone in China. The Mi Mix features a huge 6.4-inch display, a Snapdragon 821 chipset, up to 6GB of RAM, up to 256GB of storage, a 16-megapixel camera and a massive 4,400 mAh battery. But because the screen takes up so much of the phone’s face, the overall size is barely larger than Apple’s iPhone 7 Plus.
Unfortunately, it looks like the Xiaomi Mi Mix Pro will primarily be sold in China, and at this point it doesn’t seem as though the phone will ever reach the U.S. It’s safe to say, however, that if the phone is a major success, we could eventually see devices with a similar design make their way to North America. Apart from the huge display, the phone features an impressive 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage — all for the equivalent of $515.
