Xiaomi has started sending out invites for the much-awaited Mi5 launch event at China National Convention Center in Beijing on Feb. 24. The invite has the numerical 5 in a big font, which is a reference to the Mi5 smartphone, enclosed inside a black envelope.
The company's Global VP, Hugo Barra, had last month announced that the Chinese company would showcase its Mi5 on February 24 at the MWC 2016 event in Barcelona. Considering that Xiaomi has so far launched its new devices only in homeland China or India (the Mi 4i), which is the biggest overseas market for the company, we can expect this to be an indication that Xiaomi may consider releasing the new flagships in Western markets as well. Last year, Xiaomi launched an online accessory store in the United States and major European countries in an attempt to expand to Western markets.
Xiaomi Mi 5 will be pack in a Snapdragon 820 chipset and should be automatically compatible with Qualcomm's Quick Charge 3.0 standard. It is said that the Xiaomi Mi 5 will come fitted with a 3,600mAh battery.
It has been claimed that the device will be available 3 and 4GB RAM variants, with 32 and 64GB storage options available. As is the case with Xiaomi's flagship offerings, there will be no expandable storage on-board.
Finally, Hugo Barra himself has been touting and tweeting the Xiaomi Mi5 supposed class-leading camera capabilities especially in HDR mode, describing its shots as "insanely AMAZING." By next week's end, we'll be seeing for ourselves if the device does indeed live up to all the hype so far.
