One of the most popular smartphone manufacturers in the world is Xiaomi, a Chinese company whose devices draw frequent comparisons to the iPhone. Xiaomi's phones are well-designed, affordable, and unavailable to the US market, at least until now.
Although Xiaomi itself isn't selling its good-but-affordable models here yet (but they are in India and Brazil), carrier US Mobile, which runs on T-Mobile's network, now lets you get your hands on Xiaomi handsets. However, the imported phones will not include Xiaomi's latest devices such as the high-end Xiaomi Mi5.
The phones carry over their cheap price points from their original markets, though US Cellular is giving consumers the ability to pay in monthly increments. Unlike cheap smartphones in the past, these devices maintain a high build quality. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 is $169 and the most expensive device is the $229 Xiaomi Mi 4C. In between is Meizu's phablet-like M2 Note at $149 and the Xiaomi's New phone Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 for $219. Save for the Meizu device, all use a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, have 2GB of RAM, and 16 or 32GB of storage.
It appears that US Cellular is partnering with a Hong Kong based exporter that sells and fulfills the actual order. US Cellular's CEO only makes references to partnerships with Xiaomi Mobile and Meizu distributors, rather than directly with the two companies. Overall, US Cellular's decision to sell old devices is baffling. Similar devices with better specs and at the same price points, like the Honor 5X, offer consumers a better value.
