Xiaomi Mi Mix bezel-less smartphone is put through a series of stress tests to see how hearty it is. While this device looks like it’ll break the moment it’s looked at wrong, it’s come through these tests with flying colors. While we’re still waiting for a proper drop test, Xiaomi seems to have proven the basic rugged nature of this device to be solid.
Xiaomi is marketing Mi MIX as a concept device (like Apple TV was “only a hobby”) only available in China, but this is certainly designed to create even more excitement and demand for the Mi MIX and confirmed millions can be produced per month if demand exists. This is astoundingly brilliant demand generating marketing. The argument “ceramics can not scale” is ill-informed and contrary to reality. There is abundant ceramic production in China and Japan. At a less than $600 price tag this device was priced to be sold in volume, otherwise it would be a less than $1,000 smartphone.
The Mi Mix shows itself to be rather hearty when it comes to a pair of human hands bending its body. The Mi Mix also shows itself to stand up to a bit of fire quite well. Scratch testing here is done with a set of tools pressed with a human hand, so it’s not perfectly scientific – but the results seem to show that the ceramic of the bulk of this smartphone is ready to roll tough.
No matter what one may think about the technical aspects of material science, one thing is certain: the Xiaomi Mi MIX and Xiaomi Mi Note 2 is a stunningly beautiful phone and will likely influence devices that succeed it.
